Good Sam Camp

Good Sam Camp
by Alexis Nshamamba

The Good Sam Camp is a summer day-camp for homeless students in our community. It is a six week program where students are engaged in learning throughout the summer, instead of being left to roam the streets. Each morning we meet at the Camp Fire Cabin, or “home base” as we call it. Our day leads us in many directions from there. Some days you could find us on scavenger hunts in Buena Vista Park, others you may find us twirling around our parachute.

Thanks to generous Camp Fire Donors, fourteen of our youth were able to attend Camp Natoma last year – certainly a highlight of the summer! (I am still hearing about the Amotan almost a year later!)  We currently have fifteen students on the Campership list for 2015.

A primary focus of our summer program is reading intervention, with the hopes that students will go back to school after summer with increased reading levels. In addition, the Good Samaritan shelter will be working closely with Camp Fire to implement some of the key principals of Camp Fire programming. We are looking forward to a fun summer at the cabin, a sanctuary for our students!
